It feels like CBD (Cannabidiol) is everywhere today, but that wasn’t true just six years ago. Thanks in part to the 2018 Farm Bill, which federally legalized all hemp products, CBD became an everyday term. To celebrate that milestone, an organization called cbdMD named January “National CBD Month” and it’s part of an initiative to raise awareness, provide education, and break myths about CBD.
What is CBD?
As cannabis products become increasingly legal across the nation, we’re hearing more about their wide range of potential uses and benefits. The cannabis plant produces more than 100 compounds, called “cannabinoids.” The two most common are CBD and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). While they share a chemical formula, unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive, so it doesn’t result in the typical adult-use cannabis high.
CBD comes in several forms, including oils, gummies, extracts, patches, vapes, topicals, serums, and lotions. It’s also the active ingredient in Epidiolex, the first medication made from a marijuana ingredient approved by the FDA to treat epilepsy.
Benefits of CBD
While CBD research is ongoing, clinical studies have already shown that it has the potential to offset anxiety and depression, and help treat opioid addiction and alleviate the symptoms associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), including muscle tightness and stiffness. It can also reduce post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, including decreasing anxiety, treat certain Epilepsy syndromes and otherwise unmanageable pain (like arthritis), ease diabetic complications, and provide protection against several pathological disorders, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis.
In addition, CBD has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects that can relieve generalized pain, help with sleep disorders and insomnia, relieve nausea or vomiting, and help reduce existing acne and future outbreaks.
And because CBD is a natural compound, CBD products can be more holistic and potentially safer alternatives to managing various health concerns without relying solely on pharmaceuticals.
"CBD is an amazing, non-psychoactive option that has anti-inflammatory and calming properties,” notes a Fine Fettle pharmacist. “When coupled with low-dose THC, its pain-relieving and other therapeutic effects go even further."
