Fettle Flier: Fireside Chat with Theraplant

Greetings, #FineFettleFam! The Fettle Flier will now be coming to you every week! Some weeks will include Fine Fettle content or cannabis info, others will just be a product showcase. Since our growers are constantly introducing exciting new products to the CT MMP, we want to make sure that we're highlighting as many new (or returning favorites) as we can. Speaking of our growers, starting this issue, we'll be featuring an interview with one of our four producers every few weeks. These interviews aren’t just each grower’s opportunity to stand out from the pack, but also a chance for you, the patients, to get a better understanding of how each one is working to provide quality medical cannabis to the CT MMP. The order of appearance is random, and up first is Theraplant!

If you've flipped through our in-store paper menu, you're already familiar with our "Final Fettles"—products that have recently had their prices adjusted. Did you know that you can view these on our online menu as well? After you've selected "Willimantic" or "Newington" under the "Order Online" header, selected "Featured" under the "Categories" section to the left.

This Wednesday, February 26th, Andrew and Matt will be representing Fine Fettle at the 2020 Hemp Conference & Trade Show at Maneeley's Banquet & Catering in South Windsor from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. If you're attending, be sure to stop by booth #21 to say hi!

1. Let's get right to it, what makes Theraplant unique? What makes you guys great?

In an industry dominated by large MSOs (Multi-State Operators), we take pride in the fact that we are the only privately held and locally owned, licensed Marijuana Producer in the state of CT. Because we operate solely in CT, we are 100% focused on our mission to create affordable, quality cannabis products for CT patients, and promote the success of our state's Medical Marijuana Program. From the top down, we are staffed by a diverse, knowledgeable, experienced, and close-knit group of local people who are as invested in what we do as the founders themselves.

2. What innovations can we be expecting from Theraplant in the near future?

We’ve dedicated major time and resources in years past to incorporating cutting edge technologies in our facility and processes. At the moment our biggest project is doubling our facility size, which will make room for further refinements and improvements to our existing processes, as well as additional price reductions for our patients. We are always testing new strains and phenotypes, so you can expect an array of exciting new genetics from Theraplant in the near future. We’ve released over five new strains to the market in 2020 already.

3. How was Theraplant started? Tell us about your history in Connecticut.

Ethan Ruby and Dan Emmans became lifelong friends in Boston while attending college. They went on to own a dispensary and grow facility in Denver at the inception of the Colorado marijuana program. Being from the Northeast, they were actively looking for an opportunity to bring their passion and experience back home. So, when the CT Medical Marijuana Program became a reality in 2013, they decided to apply for a license. The program appealed to them because of the highly regulated nature and strict testing requirements, both of which they believed to be important elements for the future of cannabis. They’re big believers in the idea that patients should have access to safe, high-quality cannabis. As soon as they received the license for Theraplant, Dan and Ethan moved to CT and quickly grew roots. Their kids go to school here and they have strong ties to their community. Theraplant also enjoys a great relationship with Watertown, where we regularly give back whenever and however we can.

4. What is something about cannabis that you wished all patients knew?

The dangers of the black market often get brushed under the rug. Black market cannabis products are untested, unregulated, and often contain contaminants like pesticides, mycotoxins, and exogenous plant growth regulators (PGRs). When you purchase black market products you are buying blind and stepping out from under the umbrella of protection provided by our state-supported program. As much as you trust “your guy,” there’s no way to know for sure which state, or even country, a black market product is coming from. The grow environments and processing conditions are also completely unknown. All of our products are 100% independently lab tested and state approved, so you know you are purchasing safe, reliable, legal medicinal products.

5. What was the first strain you came out with in Connecticut?

We were actually the very first CT MMJ producer to release product onto the market in September of 2014. The first product released was a Sativa strain that we named 14001. The State originally required us to grind all flower down into a tobacco-like consistency, so those very first bodacious 14001 buds were shredded before patients even got the chance to see their beautiful structure. Thankfully, the state responded to the public’s feedback and has since allowed us to adopt a less aggressive form of homogenization in which the buds are left intact to a greater degree.

6. What is the hardest part about growing cannabis?

As the years have progressed, one of the biggest challenges we face on a regular basis is time. Specifically, selecting and developing new strains that meet our criteria for production involves a lengthy process that requires a lot of patience. When we set out to grow a new strain, we plant a variety of slightly different versions of the same strain called “phenotypes.” Each phenotype will exhibit its own unique, subtle differences in smell, size, resilience, bud structure, etc. In order to select and reproduce the perfect phenotypes, we need to allow the plants to grow until they are fully mature. Finding and reproducing a new strain can take up to a year or even longer, as this process often results in a dead end with the genetics not performing up to our high standards. Once we expand our facility we will be able to ramp up our development department and put even more new genetics out into the market.

7. I know I can’t ask you about why the two Fine Fettle dispensaries are your favorites, so instead I’ll just ask: How do you like working with Fine Fettle?

The Fine Fettle staff is incredibly friendly and easy to work with. If you’re a patient at either location, you’ll be greeted with big smiles, bigger personalities, and maybe even a dance party. Fine Fettlers are well informed, reliable, and lovely to work with.
