Big news for Connecticut cannabis shoppers: starting October 1, 2026, the state is ending its potency-based cannabis tax and instead charging a simpler, flat 10.75% tax on sales prices. That means you’ll likely save a bit more on your favorites at the register. It’s the same shelf price with less tax on top.

Here’s what’s changing, why it matters, and what it looks like on a few of our most popular products.

What Was Connecticut’s Potency Tax?

Since adult-use sales began, Connecticut has taxed cannabis by how much THC a product contains, not just what it costs. The rates were:

  • Flower: 0.625¢ per milligram of THC
  • Edibles: 2.75¢ per milligram of THC
  • Vapes, concentrates, & other products: 0.9¢ per milligram of THC

That meant the more potent the product, the more tax you paid, even if two products had the same price tag. A 30% THC eighth carried almost double the cannabis tax of a lighter one at the same price.

What Changes on October 1, 2026?

Under Public Act 26-68, the per-milligram tax goes away. It’s replaced by a flat 10.75% tax on the sale price, no matter the THC content. The 6.35% state sales tax and the 3% municipal cannabis tax aren’t changing.

The short version: before, you were taxed on milligrams. Now, you’re taxed on price.

Before vs. After: Real Connecticut Cannabis Prices

Here’s what that looks like out the door, with shelf prices unchanged and all taxes included:

Product Before  After Savings
3.5g flower, 30% THC (an eighth) $39.37 $36.03 $3.34
1g vape (90% THC) $62.78 $60.05 $2.73
THC Gummies (100mg) $30.09 $30.03 $.03

Overall, the prices of your favorite products will stay the same, but if you’re a fan of higher-potency products, the new tax system will save you more than on lower-potency products like gummies.

Picking up all three? That’s $6.13 back in your pocket on a single visit.

Who Saves the Most Under the New Flat Tax?

The biggest wins go to more potent flower, vapes, and concentrates. The old tax grew with every milligram of THC, so those products carried the heaviest load. Under the flat tax, a 30% eighth and a 20% eighth at the same price are taxed exactly the same.
